The Fall of the Pharos by dashinvaine The Fall of the Pharos by dashinvaine
Oil on board, 34cm (13inches) x23cm (9.5 inches). Something inspired by the traditon of Claude Lorraine and JMW Turner. Might do a bigger version of this scene at some stage in the future.

The Pharos Lighthouse in Alexandria was one of the ancent Seven Wonders of the world. it was built on the orders of the first Ptolemy in the 3rd century BC, and survived well into the Middle Ages, when the Muslim chronicler Ibn Jubayr recorded it thus:

'Description of it falls short, the eyes fail to comprehend it, and words are inadequate, so vast is the spectacle'.

It was ultimately brough down by an eaethquake in the fourteenth century AD, an event which I thought would make a dramatic painting.

Pity - it almost made it into modern times like the Pyramids. Alexandria, for all being a great city, is singularly unlucky. Besides losing the Pharos, it lost the great Library of Alexandria, the tomb of Alexander the Great, and the tombs of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony. There was some remains of Pharos found near the site in the harbor by a French Expedition in the 1990s, and they are still looking for Alexander's and Cleopatra's and Mark Anthony's tombs. Best luck to them. You captured the tragedy of that last moment for Pharos quite well. Thank you.

I wish it was too. If I had the money, I'd build a replica.

It's been quite a long while since I have seen you and now that I've worked through my 'missed' deviations I have seen all you have done in the last couple of years and I am amazed at the improvements you have gone through.

This piece is one of the works that proves it. The colours and flow of the pic is very nicely done! Bravo!

Awesome subject well-executed. I'm always impressed with how much detail you can effectively cram into small pieces (I thought this one would be twice as large as the dimensions you gave--I don't work that well with smaller brushes). I particularly love the thrashing sea, which, as I understand, can become very violent during an earthquake.
