This is a beautiful painting. Great job. The only thing is her eyes, while the rest of the painting has good volume, her eyes seem just a little flat. Other than that, great composition with the warriors, it worked out nicely.
I don't know who the Iceni Queen is but she's pretty (I love red hair)

I like how you scale the subject matter in your paintings, this one included. It's close-up, portrait-like, but you throw in so many supporting details that the overall composition becomes more complex and engaging. it's more an illustration than a portrait. I like that. Very nice. --Faile35

Haha, thanks. I tried to go by the description in the Roman history of Dio Cassius, and to base details like jewellery and weaponry on authentic finds from the period. Boudica would probably have been in her thirties she led her revolt, hopefully my image of her looks about right! Some paint her as a mad, wild harpy, but I didn't want to emphasize that side of her too much.
I suspect the artists who portray her as a 'mad, wild harpy' have a spot of Roman blood in them and bear her a grudge. And if she had been viewed as mad, she was entitled to be. I'm not sure how sound my knowledge is of that period in history, but the salacious version that I recall is that her campaigns against the Romans began after her husband died and the once peaceful co-existence between the Iceni and Roman settlers/invaders ended after they raped both her and her daughter(s).
Perhaps you can clear up something else. A few years back I was commissioned to do a painting of Brigantia in Celtic dress and the person who requested the pic was adamant the torque was used to support a cloak - I bluffed it on that occasion. I've tried to draw one supporting a cloak more recently, but can't figure out how such a small band would support all that fabric. Do you recall seeing a torque depicted that way?
