I would recommend these stories very highly. In the setting, other dimensions, including the shattered realm of faerie, spill over into our familiar world. The protagonist, young Petra Godfellow, discovers that she is descends from Puck, who led a rebellion against king Oberon, who has stalked her family ever since seeking to impose an onerous obligation that would restore the realm. Fortunately Petra finds allies including fellow fay who have been taken on human and animal form (and some not quite either) in this world. The books contain many clever literary and mythological allusions, and some surreal and striking imagery. Here Petra's college room-mate Wysteri is visited by a sinister figure from another dimension. Plus his pets.
